The pelerine is a short cape like garment that originated in the 15th century as a type of armor padding. It was used to protect the shoulders and neck and was attached to pauldrons. The term comes from the Italian word pellegrini which refers to the cloak worn by Christian pilgrims. The pelerine may have originated as a type of armor padding in the 15th century. In the mid to late 19th century, the pelerine was a popular fashion item in Europe and the Americas.

 

The palerine protected the upper body from rain. It was also used as an accessory in many costume styles. Pelerines were often made of Canvas and cotton lining inside the pelerine.
